In the “Proposal Writing” sessions with Tracy Kaufman of Candid, the 2023 GLI Cohort delves into the world of artful fundraising.
Kaufman shows how written proposals stand the best chance by aligning three elements —
1) Financial and impact data that bring to life the credibility of the plan
2) Language tailored to address the values of the prospective funder
3) A “common understanding” connecting the prospective funder and requesting project
Like many other facets of a vibrant organization, funds-seeking is founded upon relationships.
Cultivating relationships helps to transform request letters from generic to stand-out. Most importantly, relationships can give prospective funders confidence that behind a proposal are responsible, long-term-thinking arts leaders.
So what do funders want in a proposal?
Good intentions aren’t enough… proposals need a compelling case for support. Proposals must convey a “high-impact return” on investment — with a low risk of not delivering on outcomes. ▣
