How innovation works: Architect I M Pei

I M Pei was a Chinese-American architect known for his creative use of modernist architecture combined with natural elements and open spaces. He designed some of the world’s most recognizable and iconic buildings, such as the Louvre Pyramid in Paris, the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha.

Here are three insights into innovation from I M Pei’s story.

  1. Explore cultural heritage. I M Pei was fascinated by the traditional architecture of his homeland, such as the garden villas in Suzhou. He also studied and admired the works of other culturally-influenced architects, especially Le Corbusier.
  2. Focus on quality. I M Pei was obsessed with details, proportions, and aesthetics. He sought to create buildings that were functional and harmonious with their surroundings.
  3. Stay curious. I M Pei was a lifelong learner who continued to design and consult until his late 90s. He traveled extensively to research and experience different places and contexts.
