Emerging technology for arts innovation

In the GLI’s “Emerging Technologies for Innovation” Substream curated by Aliena Haig (Academy for Impact through Music), fellows explore applying technological solutions to arts, education, and career development challenges. This is examined through first-hand conversations with industry leaders ranging from Muvak — an innovative digital hiring and collaboration platform, to OAcademy — the global music conservatory for career-track musicians pairing online and in-person training.

Through these and other examples, GLI fellows consider complex questions arts leaders can benefit from applying to their home contexts, including —

1. What is the ‘starting point’ for a technological solution? Should solution design begin by focusing on existing challenges and lead to the potential application of technology to address these? Or should the design process start by anticipating future opportunities to arise out of shifting behaviors that stem from the use of new technologies? There is no beginning or end to this circle: we create technological solutions that shape what we create. In this way, our behavior is both a guiding force behind and a reflection of emergent technologies.

2. Does technology drive solutions? Or are solutions human-centered? The best “technological solutions” are human-centered at their core — with technology applied to either minimize a negative human experience or augment a positive one. Either way, the most powerful technological applications lead to human-centered outcomes.
