Leadership Lessons with National Sawdust’s Ana de Archuleta

In a few sentences, what does impact mean in the context of your work?

In the context of my work, impact means maximizing resources to provide opportunities to a larger group of artists, particularly those from underrepresented communities. It involves creating meaningful and lasting changes that elevate these artists’ voices and contributions, fostering diversity and inclusion in the arts.

What aspect of your work’s process do you focus on most day-to-day, and why?

Day-to-day, I focus on ensuring the organization operates efficiently and effectively. This includes supporting the team across all departments to ensure they have the resources and guidance needed to excel in their roles. I also work closely with the board to strategize on how to grow our institution sustainably and responsibly. Maintaining fiscal responsibility is a key part of my role, as it ensures the long-term viability of our mission and projects.

Is there an innovation, new initiative, or new approach that has impacted, enhanced, or otherwise expanded/improved your organization’s work in recent years?

Yes, several initiatives have significantly enhanced our work. Our focus on commissioning and supporting composers, particularly women and those from marginalized genders, has been profoundly impactful. Additionally, our partnerships with organizations that lack their own venues have allowed us to support and present diverse artistic voices. Our unique collaborative curator model enables us to work across various genres and disciplines, enriching our programming. Under the visionary leadership of Artistic Director Paola Prestini, we continue to innovate and push the boundaries of our field.

How do you balance mission-driven work with the need for financial sustainability?

Balancing mission-driven work with financial sustainability requires a strategic approach. We build and nurture relationships with institutions and individuals who share our vision, ensuring that every dollar contributed to our mission is used effectively for maximum impact. This involves careful planning, sometimes making difficult decisions to prioritize projects that align closely with our goals. Our programming balances new works, multidisciplinary projects, commercial events, rentals, and partnerships to ensure diverse revenue streams while staying true to our mission.

In what ways do you see the role of arts leaders transforming in the years ahead?

I see arts leaders increasingly emerging from artistic backgrounds, bringing valuable perspectives from their experiences to challenge and transform outdated hierarchical systems. This shift promotes a more inclusive and collaborative leadership style, breaking down barriers and fostering innovation. Arts leaders will continue to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that the arts remain a vibrant and accessible space for all.

Founded in 2015 by composer Paola Prestini and Kevin Dolan, National Sawdust operates out of an intimate space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, equipped with a state-of-the-art spatial sound system. The New York Times has hailed it as “the city’s most vital new-music hall” and “a triumphantly successful performance space that stands for a hip, sophisticated brand of new music.” Paola Prestini serves as the artistic director, while Ana De Archuleta is the managing director, making National Sawdust one of the few New York cultural institutions led by women. The institution provides artists across genres and disciplines with comprehensive support, including commissions, workshops, residencies, public performances, recording, mentorship, and professional development.
